County initiates withdrawal from law enforcement agreement
The Lake County Commissioners sent a certified letter to Gov. Greg Gianforte Monday, formally announcing their intention to withdraw from Public Law 280, the nearly 60-year-old agreement that gives the state jurisdiction over felonies committed by tribal members on the reservation.
Ninepipes Museum benefits from preservation grant
The Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana made good use of a $6,500 grant awarded by the Foundation for Montana History this year. This grant funded new vertical shelving for the museum’s stored art collection, humidifiers to stabilize humidity levels during winter months, an upright freezer to ensure new collections entering the museum are pest-free, and archival supplies to safely store collections.

A Pablo man was transported to a regional, out-of-state burn unit last week after he was injured when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a residence on Paper Trail, off Mud Lake Trail north of Pablo.

Donna Marie Ramsey Zielke, 84, of Polson, passed away in Bulh, Idaho, on Nov. 11, 2023. She was born Jan. 10, 1939, in Kalispell.
Ronan council to consider change-order resolution
Ronan City Council discussed giving Public Works Director Dan Miller authority to approve change orders on the water improvement project to keep work moving forward in a timely manner. The matter came up at the council’s regular meeting Nov. 8.
Lights Under the Big Sky postponed during water/sewer overhaul
Due to a major water and sewer project underway on the Ronan Fairgrounds, the Lights Under the Big Sky board decided to postpone the annual light-studded event until 2024. Meanwhile, construction on the new project “is going great guns,” said Project and Grounds Manager Sjaan Vincent. Funds for the $806,500 project construction project came from the state of Montana’s portion of American Rescue Plan Act and Lake County’s ARPA dollars, as well as from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation’s Minimum Allocation Fund.
Barbara Monaco: A lifetime of helping kids
Barbara Monaco retired Oct. 6 after nearly 38 years as a juvenile probation officer for Lake and Sanders counties, most of those at the department’s helm. Just three days earlier, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Montana Board of Crime Control, which characterized her as someone who “puts her whole heart and self into the safety and well-being of our community.”

Lake County detective sets world record in power lifting
While Scott Sciaretta usually does detective work for the Lake County Sheriff's Office, in October, he traveled across the Atlantic and represented his country at the IPL World Championships in England. And he did it well, earning first place in three different events.
Mission plays tough, ends run at Divisionals
Mission fell in two matches at the Western B Divisional Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 1-2. In their first-round matchup, they dropped three sets to Anaconda, and then in Thursday’s morning consolation game, they fell to Deer Lodge in four sets, concluding their 2023 season. They host the Mission Valley All-Star Volleyball Game on Monday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m.
Arlee falls in Quarterfinals
The 2023 season will go down as one of the best for the Arlee Warriors after an undefeated regular season and a playoff victory. The magical ride, however, ended last Saturday, Nov. 4, after the Warriors fell to Fairview 70-22 in the State Eight-Man Football Quarterfinals.

Paving nears completion on U.S. 93-Ronan North

Car thief gets deferred sentence
The imposition of sentencing was deferred for three years in Polson District Court Nov. 2 for a Missoula man convicted of theft, resolving a crime from 2017. According to court records, on Dec. 29, 2017, a woman contacted law enforcement to report the theft of her 2006 Kia. She explained that it had been left running in front of her sister’s house while she was there to pick up her children.
Gerald Brown, 83
Gerald Leroy “Jerry” Brown of Polson was born Jan. 7, 1940, to the late Dorothy Morigeau and Thomas W. Brown, Sr. in St. Ignatius. Jerry died peacefully with his family by his side on Oct. 29, 2023, in Kalispell as the result of a major hemorrhagic stroke.

Odette Kathleen Gasser passed away Oct. 29, 2023, from complications of pneumonia at her home in Kalispell with her husband by her side. Her memorial service will be Nov. 10, 2023, at the Pablo Christian Church at 11 a.m. with a light lunch following. Please join us.
McCrea admits to drug charge; arson trial moved to February
The Ronan man accused of intentionally setting the July 2021 Boulder fire, admitted to a drug possession charge. Craig Allen McCrea, 38, entered a plea of guilty in Polson District Court Oct. 31 to an unrelated charge of criminal possession of dangerous drugs.
Anna Marie Nelson, 91
On the morning of Oct. 27, 2023, following an unseasonably early snowfall, the skies cleared, and the sun came out. This was the day our Mother, Anna Marie Nelson of Polson, was called to heaven. Funeral services for Anna will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the St. Ignatius Mission Catholic Church.

The Port Polson Players, in association with Mission Valley Friends of the Arts, begins their 49th season of live theatre with "Bus Stop" by William Inge. A cast of eight popular Mission Valley performers brings the classic comedy/drama to Polson's Theatre on the Lake for two weekends, Nov. 10-19.
Ronan Seniors: Need donations for new oven
Our oven is going out! We have applied for grants but that will only cover part of the cost so we are asking for donations to cover the remainder.

The center is collecting coats, scarves, mittens/gloves and socks for elementary and middle school kids. We are accepting new and slightly used items to help keep kids warm during the winter.

Man convicted of drugs, burglary now faces forgery charges
A Polson man, who was convicted of burglary and drug possession charges on Aug. 16, is now accused of forging a stolen check and possessing drugs again.
Woman admits to possessing large amount of heroin
Judge Molly Owen set a sentencing date of Dec. 13 for a Ronan woman, who admitted to possessing heroin. Talia Jodeen Richardson, 31, entered a plea of guilty in Polson District Court Oct. 25, to felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs.
Public input sought for Community Wildfire Protection Plan
Lake County is in the process of updating its Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) – a document that helps identify and address the local threats of wildfire. One critical step is community involvement. To that end Lake County will host a meeting and open house, 6-8 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Ronan Community Center.

Lady Pirates drop five-set matchup against Bigfork
Polson dropped its final game of the season to Bigfork in five sets, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 11-25, 15-6 on Senior Night – Tuesday, Oct. 24. The Lady Pirates sit at 9-5 in conference play, which earned them the No. 2 Northwest seed in the upcoming Western A Conference Tournament, Nov. 2-4 in Polson.

Helping Patriots: Chuck Lewis becomes golf ambassador for veterans
Chuck Lewis had never played golf before he read about a PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program on the Missoula Veterans Service Network. The Ronan resident (United States Marine Corps 1970-’74 and United States Navy Reserve 1980-’88) immediately signed up for the seven-week course at the Missoula golf course.
Sunny White makes first court appearance
The arraignment hearing for a Butte woman accused of hitting and killing an Arlee woman with her Cadillac Escalade has been continued to Nov. 8. Judge Molly Owen continued the case on Oct. 25 at the request of Sterling Lauden, the managing attorney for the Lake County Public Defender’s Office.
Cancer support group meets twice a month
A cancer support group gathers from noon to 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Chapel at St. Joseph Medical Center.

Mema, as we all called her, went to be with our Lord and Savior Aug. 20, 2022, at 8:11 p.m. in Levelland, Texas. Memorial services will be held at the Ronan Church of Christ on Nov. 11, 2023, at 11 a.m. A potluck will follow services.
Mission places third at District
The Mission volleyball team picked up three victories in the Western 7B volleyball tournament over the weekend and placed third to advance to the Western Regional Volleyball Tournament next weekend.
Quarterfinals Bound: Arlee battles back in playoff win against Flint Creek
Finding themselves down 16-8 in the first quarter, the Arlee Warriors dug deep and battled back for a 36-16 State eight-man playoff victory over three-seed Flint Creek on Saturday, Oct. 28, on the Warriors’ home field. Arlee improved to 9-0 on the season and advanced to the State eight-man quarterfinals, where they will host No. 1 East seed Fairview on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m.

A Pablo man is accused of leading law enforcement on a pursuit on the back roads of central Lake County that put fear into one of his passengers.
